If the resistance to US forces is really about independence from the US, Saddam's capture may actually spur the resistance, because I am sure there are those folks in Iraq who did not want Saddam back in power, and who figured if the US left he would come back. Now, with Saddam removed, every would be despot can imagine that he will be in power once the US is gone- that's powerful motivation to fight. If there are many Iraqis who would like to fill Saddam's shoes, then I would expect the resistance movement there to intensify now that Saddam is gone, and the risk of his return is eliminated.
