KleenAir Cleans Up London Taxis

IRVINE, Calif. — KleenAir Systems Inc. today said it had successful tests of its NOxMaster NOx Reduction System combined with its Oxidizing Particulate Trap (OPT) on a 15-year-old London Fairway Taxicab.

Results indicated more than an 80 percent reduction in NOx and more than a 95 percent reduction in particulates with devices cost effective for light-duty vehicles. The tests were conducted at the MillBrook Proving Grounds under a grant from the Energy Savings Trust.

The tests were a precursor to the implementation of a proposed London Taxi Retrofit Program designed to achieve Euro 3 standards under a program initiated by Ken Livingstone, London Mayor, at the end of 2002.

Current planning by the Public Carriage Office has a target of April 1, 2004, implementation for new taxi permitting standards requiring taxis to meet Euro 3 emissions for both NOx and particulates. The number of vehicles initially planned for the retrofitting is 13,500 of the city's 20,000 taxis.

The company is collaborating with Dinex Exhaust Ltd., its European systems integrator, to create this combination particulate/NOx reduction system to be sold in the UK under the trademark DINOX.

Systems installation and maintenance arrangements are in place and are capable of retrofitting a large number of taxis in a short period of time. Financing is being offered to taxi owners to assist with any retrofit costs not covered by government funding programs.
