Pakistani president escapes bomb by seconds

President Pervaiz Musharraf of Pakistan escaped an apparent assassination attempt by seconds yesterday when a bomb detonated after his car crossed a bridge near the city of Rawalpindi.

"As the president's motorcade passed, a huge explosion blew up the bridge," said Sheharyar Khan, whose car was caught in a roadblock after the blast in the city, where the country's military has its headquarters.

"The president's motorcade passed a minute before the blast," said a military spokesman. "He is safe and sound."

The presidential convoy was passing through the outskirts of Rawalpindi after arriving at Islamabad International Airport nearby. He was returning to the capital from a visit to the southern city of Karachi.

Gen Musharraf's enemies are numerous. He incensed Islamist groups by abandoning Pakistan's support for neighbouring Afghanistan's ousted Taliban rulers and by backing the American-led war on terrorism after the September 11 attacks.

Last month, he announced the banning of six militant groups after Washington complained that they had re-emerged with new names after being outlawed a year ago.

In October, a Karachi court convicted three Islamic militants for a failed attempt to assassinate the president last year, sentencing all three to 10-year jail terms.
