NEW YORK (Dow Jones)---Economists expect the current account deficit to have narrowed slightly in the third quarter.

The median estimate of 14 economists surveyed Monday by Dow Jones Newswires and CNBC is for a narrowing to $136.2 billion from $138.7 billion in both the first and second quarters.

The Commerce Department is due to release the current account deficit for the third quarter at 8:30 a.m. EST (1330 GMT) Tuesday.

"A small decline in the goods-and-services portion of the current account deficit in the third quarter has already been reported in the monthly data," points out Jim O'Sullivan, senior economist at UBS Investment Research in Stamford, Conn. "The level remains high, however. At an estimated 4.9% of gross domestic product, the deficit is up from 4.6%, on average, in 2002." O'Sullivan estimates that the total current account deficit was $136.0 billion in the third quarter.
