Donating online by starting at alphaproject.org
gave me a server error or something....

The www.alphaproject.org link for donating online seems to be up and running again.

People should remember the IRS rules on making sure donations count for this tax year.

The rules are asymmetrical:

If you donate by check, you can mail the check to the charitable donee as late as 12/31, and still deduct the contribution on your 2003 tax return, even though the check may not clear your bank until a week or more into 2004. (You don't need to worry about postmark, return receipt, or anything like that -- in effect, so long as the check clears your bank at a time consistent with with having been mailed in 2003, no problem.)

But if you donate by credit card, you can validly deduct for 2003 only if the charge is posted to your credit card account by 12/31. Mailing, or even donating online, by 12/31 is not enough if your bank or credit card company hasn't debited your account by 12/31. A web-based donation will presumably get posted to your account with your credit card bank in a matter of a day or two, if not instantaneously, although system glitches could presumably delay this a bit.
