There are many people who believe that civilized nations should abolish the death penalty and many have done exactly that

True, true. But that still does not address the elephant in the living room - the dictators whom people like Jacques Chirac front for in polite European society. I have little stomach for someone who opposes the death penalty while protecting a mass murderer, and selling him arms.
