I have always found the Chilean wines a bit tannic; however, at a recent wine show I tasted a Carmenere. Clearly suited to the country, it is a nice spicy varietal and there are many cheap good examples.

2002 Sunrise Carmenere by Concha Y Toro sells for 11 loonies and is a great wine for the price. I believe a silver medal winner in one of the London shows it starts with plenty of fruit and has a nice spicy finish and very clean ending.

The Caliterra 2002 Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and balanced as well.
