Phil, since I am the one who "bandied about" your name and who also introduced the idea of a Saddam look-alike, perhaps I should make it clear how I feel.
1. The greatest enemies which the US has are within the US itself and particularly within the administration.
2. I agree with both John and Raymond that the administration couldn't give a damn how anyone feels about what they do. Their self-righteousness and determination to proceed on their PNAC (Project for a New American Century) course is undeterred, no matter what happens.
3. Since they couldn't substantiate the given reason for invading Iraq ie WMDs, either by finding or planting them, a subsidiary reason, namely the removal of Saddam, became of increased importance. In fact, since bin Laden was not found either, and nine of the alleged 9-11 hijackers were still alive after the event, this administration has clearly become one of no credibility and a focus of ridicule and contempt. What they, in fact, have told the world is lie after lie after lie in order to justify criminal act after criminal act. They are, without any doubt, the worst administration in the history of the United States.
Thus, with this background in mind, I ask myself whether anything has changed with the discovery of this supposedly Saddam-like character. And, I have to conclude that the answer to that is no.
Presuming he is Saddam, he can not be given a true and a fair trial either in Iraq or anywhere else. He cannot be considered innocent before proven guilty because he has already been found guilty by the court of US propaganda and the media. In fact, under what is usually known as due process, any trial in any civilized country would have to be abandoned because no impartial witness or judge could be found to try him.

So, what are they going to do with this guy? (a)Give him a mock trial? That would make the US administration even less credible than it already is.
(b) Pretend to give him a fair trial, whatever that is? That's patently absurd because many/most of his evil deeds have been done either at the behest of the US or with US' collusion --- and the world knows it.

So, they can't bring him to a proper trial. A lynch mob, yes, a summary execution, yes, but a proper trial, no. The justice that W keeps mentioning will be as elusive as the truth, certainly as far as his administration is concerned. W, in fact, has been hoisted on his own petard. He will not be able to ride down 5th Avenue holding Saddam's head aloft. In fact, the sooner he forgets about Saddam, the better for him.
And, to embarrass his administration even further, the capture of "Saddam" will do nothing towards ameliorating or diminishing the strong anti-US feeling which prevails in Iraq at the moment. We have been told repeatedly that most of the insurgents were "pro-Saddam loyalists" and that, when he was captured, peace would return. In fact, W has already pre-empted that bit of fiction by announcing that the insurgency would not be over now that Saddam has been captured.

It is my opinion that events are now overtaking W and his gang and that they are actually losing control, particularly of the financial aspects. I was astounded how the world currency markets in fact sold the USD after the Saddam announcement as if it was a total non-event or else no-one believed it.
So, in the circumstances, I contend that it does not matter one iota if the bearded guy they found is actually Saddam or it isn't? For all the "good" he is going to do anyone they may as well put him back in the hole and forget about him. |
