Coal itself has never been my objection. MidAmerican is building a new 'supercritical' coal burner in the midwest, which will create electricity with a lower environmental burden.

Edit: a Canadian concern is also investing in SuperCritcal coal technology at a plant, but I forget which. In a conference call, they mention this appearing as an untested technology in North America, but suggest the Japanese have a wealth of experience with it.

There are 'cool' technologies to convert coal into all kinds of useful things, yet we americans 'apply some glue' to make it eligible for synfuel tax credits, and then burn it. It is this appearance of 'environmental neglect for the sake of profit' that gets under my craw.
