I have often read about such emotional reactions in prisoners released from the concentration camps. Only when they had been freed, and started to be a little human again (as opposed to the animal existence to which they had been degraded in the camps), could they realize the extent of the degradation. It was remarked that when ex-prisoners began to recover physically, they were then at greatest risk for suicide.
