True. The US has limited means and cannot intervene everywhere such intervention might be useful. Where the nation chooses to intervene is driven by considerations of national interest. No dispute there. But that does not negate or erase that those interventions that do take place may serve purposes that advance human rights and accomplish a great deal of good - as both the Balkans, Afghan, and Iraqi interventions did. And yes, the humanitarian purposes do constitute one of, if not the sole, justifications for the intervention. Having multiple motives for decisions is common.

The insistance of critics that a particular action is "hypocritical" because similar actions aren't taken everywhere in the world I find a childish argument.
