SPITZER NOW SET TO GET ON DEAN'S LIST

By FREDRIC U. DICKER

December 15, 2003 -- WITH Howard Dean's presidential train poised to leave the station, Attorney General Eliot Spitzer is getting ready to jump on board.

Spitzer, who vowed a few months ago never to back Dean because of the former Vermont governor's anti-war stand, and is known to prefer a more centrist candidate, now says he's changed his mind.

Spitzer told The Post he is willing to back the front-running Democrat if he becomes his party's nominee, despite having declared in June, "The American people will not elect somebody who opposed a war they supported."

"I would not support Dean, even though I like him enormously," Spitzer said at the time.

Spitzer said in a statement released yesterday that he's now convinced Dean can win next year's election, insisting, "Whoever wins the Democratic nomination will be in a strong position to take on President Bush."

A source close to Spitzer then quickly added, "That means that if Dean wins the Democratic nomination, the attorney general will support him."
