SouthernEra adds Schultz to board

Wed 17 Dec 2003 News Release
Mr. Patrick Evans reports
SOUTHERNERA APPOINTS TREVOR SCHULTZ TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
SouthernEra Resources has appointed veteran global mining executive, Trevor
Schultz, to the company's board with effect from Jan. 1, 2004.
Mr. Schultz is currently the chief operating officer and executive director
of Ashanti Goldfields Company Limited and will be retiring from that
position at the end of the year. During his seven years with Ashanti
Goldfields, Mr. Schultz led the Group's aggressive gold expansion program
in Africa, including the development of three new gold mines in Ghana,
Guinea and Tanzania.
Through a distinguished career that has spanned more than 40 years, Mr.
Schultz has held the following positions:
1995-96 -- senior vice-president and chief operating officer, Pegasus Gold
Corporation (Spokane, Wash.);
1994-95 -- president and CEO, Aurtex Inc. (San Francisco, Calif.);
1979-94 -- senior vice-president and group general manager, BHP (Melbourne,
Australia);
1972-78 -- mine manager, Rio Tinto (Australia, Namibia and Papua New
Guinea);
1970-72 -- senior research fellow, University of the Witwatersrand (South
Africa); and
1959-72 -- various underground mining positions, Anglo American Corporation
(South Africa).
Mr. Schultz earned an MSc of mining engineering from the University of
Witwatersrand; an MA in economics from Trinity College at Cambridge
University and studied advanced management at Harvard University.
Commenting on Mr. Schultz's appointment, SouthernEra chairman, Dr. Chris
Jennings, said: "There are few international mining executives with the
operating experience of Trevor Schultz. Through a distinguished career that
has spanned more than 40 years, Trevor has contributed to the success of
some of the world's major mining companies. His experience spans three
continents and some of the most challenging operating conditions. We look
forward to his valuable contribution on the SouthernEra board."
SouthernEra president and chief executive officer, Patrick Evans, added:
"Mr. Schultz's almost unmatched international operating experience will be
of considerable support to our growing operating team at Messina Platinum.
His most recent experience in Africa's fast growing gold industry will also
be very beneficial in providing guidance as SouthernEra continues with
exploration at the Koumba gold project in Gabon."
