A propos of "mean-spirited," is anybody but me watching "Angels in America" on HBO? I really enjoyed it and am watching it a second time.
Things that might make conservatives angry - there is a gay Republican lawyer who comes out of the closet. Well, so what, gay Republican lawyers exist, some of them closeted. Unkind things said about Mormons, but by a Mormon character. A suggestion that God is no longer paying attention to us.
And then there's the portrayal of Roy Cohn. Which I think is actually relatively sympathetic, given that one of the characters calls him the "pole star of evil." He's portrayed by Al Pacino in a bravura performance as a cantankerous, sometimes hateful, usually narcissistic man who pretends that he's not gay, all of which is probably accurate. And I think it's quite clear that the disbarment proceedings against him were vindictive and kicking him when he's down, and that nobody dared to go after him until he WAS down. He's full of piss and vinegar and very, very funny.
Anyway, one reason I am watching it again is that I was half asleep during the ending so need to figure out how it ended. The other reason is that I think it's brilliant.
There's heterosexual sex, gay sex, human-angel sex, male and female nudity, foul language, blood, vomit and maybe even diarrhea, but the bodily fluids are not gratuitous, but due to there being a couple of HIV positive characters who are dying in hospitals. Black humor, some of it racist.
CB says check it out. HBO has done it again. |
