Birim intersects 18.38 g/t Au over six metres at Bui

2003-12-17 13:20 ET - News Release

Mr. Denis Simoneau reports

BIRIM EXTENDS TOMBE-PARABU GOLD DISCOVERY IN GHANA-DRILLING RETURNS 18.38 G/T GOLD OVER 6 METRES

Recent reverse circulation drilling on Birim Goldfields' Bui project in Ghana, West Africa, has extended the strike length of its previously announced Tombe-Parabu north gold discovery 70 metres to the north of the discovery hole, CTR-127. Drill hole CTR-186, located along line 27+150N, intersected a steep to moderately dipping pyritized, silicified zone which returned 18.38 grams per tonne gold over a downhole length of six metres starting at 36 metres downhole. In the same hole, a second interval, grading 6.66 grams per tonne gold over two metres, was cut at a depth of 71 metres. Further, a drill hole recently drilled 50 metres to the south of CTR-127 intersected a silicified zone with a width of approximately 10 metres. Assays are pending.

On Nov. 3, 2003, Birim Goldfields (BGI) reported in Stockwatch results from the first group of 46 reverse circulation holes, CTR-82 through CTR-127, drilled on the extensive Tombe-Parabu gold-in-soil anomaly on the company's Bui district properties. The last hole drilled for which assays were available, CTR-127, returned two significant gold intersections: 4.47 grams per tonne over 17 metres commencing at 22 metres downhole and 2.90 grams per tonne over 11 metres starting 47 metres downhole.

On the Tombe-Parabu south anomaly, an area not previous drilled, 26 reverse circulation holes were completed along two lines, 24+000N and 24+600N. Results from the drilling were mixed; however, one hole returned two metres grading 21.48 grams per tonne gold. Sampling along a trench, 300 metres long by 1.5 metre deep, cut along line 24+200N, returned significant gold mineralization, most notably a composite sample representing a four-metre interval grading 20.92 grams per tonne gold, located along the eastern margin of the gold-in-soil anomaly. Plans are being made to follow up on the high-grade gold results from the trenching and drilling programs.

"We are extremely excited about the extension of the Tombe-Parabu north gold zone," reported Denis Simoneau, president and chief executive officer, "and are encouraged by the results from Tombe-Parabu south. More drilling is required to get a good handle on the geometry of the the northern gold zone and, to that effect, we are in the process of outlining a drill program for the new year to follow up these potential extensions."

This recent set of drill results is from a series of 59 reverse circulation drill holes,

CTR-128 through CTR-186, targeting the Tombe-Parabu south anomaly and following up on the success of the first set of Tombe-Parabu north drill results. This year, 105 reverse circulation holes have been completed on the Tombe anomalies for 7,319 metres. Reverse circulation holes are typically oriented at a dip of negative 45 degrees and drilled to a depth of approximately 60 metres. Drilling activities have ceased for the month of December but will recommence in January, 2004. Further, a mechanical excavator has been mobilized to the Tombe area to accelerate the trenching campaign. To date, four trenches for 1,790 metres have been completed and sampled.

Two-to-three-kilogram samples collected for each metre drilled (under the supervision of internationally recognized exploration consultants RSG Global Pty. Ltd.) were submitted for each metre. Samples were submitted to Transworld Laboratories in Tarkwa, Ghana, for assaying. Richard Hyde (BSc, MAIG), manager for RSG Global in West Africa and a qualified person under National Instrument 43-101, supervised and directed all work associated with the reverse circulation drill program.
