Gut, smoke and mirrors is exactly the same thing as misdirection and disinformation. I just don't like using the same terms twice in a row. And, yes, Daley stole the election for Kennedy, too. That doesn't make Dubya and his brother, the generalissimo of Florida, into good guys. The fact that Rutheford B. Hayes stole the election as a Republican didn't make Daley's action any more palatable. I say a pox on all these crooks, except that the Bushwackers are the only ones left with us.
