"I am trying to remind everyone of the number of lies that we were told by the Bush administration - including by Powell, Rumsfeld, and Cheney."
Please enlighten us to a few specific lies that each of these people told to us. Precise quotes, proper context & credible supporting links would be quite appreciated. Your general allegations prove absolutely nothing. It perhaps gives some insight into your political/ideological predisposition, but not much else IMO.
"The problem with that is that we supported and aided Saddam in the 1980s under Reagan."
What problem did any such support cause? How about a little context to this allegation? When did it begin? How much support specifically? Why was it given? For how long? And how do the actions taken by previous administrations make any actions by President Bush any more or less appropriate today?
Please be specific & stick to known facts (and of course any credible links supporting your allegations would be quite helpful).
"I'm sure you have seen the video of a smiling Rumsfled sitting with Saddam around 1988 - AFTER the Kurds were gassed? We didn't care much about that then. I care both then and now."
Around 1988? Please share that picture & any relevant factual contextual information about that alleged meeting in 1988, "AFTER" the Kurds were gassed.
"Do you justify the killing of thousands of Iraqis by saying that Saddam murdered people also?"
Bush gave Saddam fair warning to comply unconditionally to UN Resolution 1441 or face the consequences. Bush gave Saddam 48 hours to leave Iraq to avoid conflict. Saddam chose to refuse to comply with the UN. Saddam chose to stay in Iraq when he could have left, knowing the consequences of his own actions would guarantee war. Saddam chose war. Any loss of life is ultimately Saddam's responsibility.
Additionally, the Coalition forces made every effort to limit civilian casualties. The numbers of civilian casualties in this war were immensely lower than in any previous war on this scale. That too is an irrefutable fact. Name one war where there were ZERO civilian casualties.
And it's not lost on me that you have not spoken out with any forcefulness about the nearly 1 million people slaughtered by Saddam. Saddam's murder of his people continued right up to the war & would have continued had the Coalition not removed Saddam.
"Does that justify illegally invading a country, and killing it's citizens, and occupying it now?? "
What facts point to this being an "illegal" invasion? Saddam chose not to comply with the Gulf War cease fire agreement & 18 subsequent UN resolutions (which you & I debated on another thread so you have been provided irrefutable factual information on this). This was one of the main reasons for removing Saddam. These are irrefutable facts.
This alone was legal justification for the removal of Saddam's regime.
There were other reasons often cited by the Bush Administration too. Saddam's <font size=5>illegal WMD programs<font size=3>, not just the allegations of unaccounted for WMD's & WMD materials. Saddam's ties to & support of known terrorist groups, plus Saddam's brutally repressive regime that raped, tortured & slaughtered many hundreds of thousands of his citizens.
<font size=4>Yes, all of these reasons had been cited by the Bush Administration as justifications to remove Saddam from power.<font size=3>
I look forward to your factual, historically accurate reply that is fair, balanced & completely in context. |
