The capture of Saddam is perhaps the single most important news event this year. Overnight Bush's approval rating soared from the high 40s to the high 50s percentile.

Suddenly as if by magic, France and Germany are talking debt forgiveness after doing everything in their power to keep Saddam in power. Miraculously they have lost interest in trying to recover Iraq's pre-war debt and now feel obliged with the UN to organize the trial of Saddam to ensure Iraqis suffer no undue embarrassment. No doubt they are distressed that Iraq might endure pain in the process, but I feel that Iraq taking jurisdiction over Saddam's trial will be a learning experience for all.
