I have a mini, 6" Christmas tree with four flashing strings of miniture LEDs being driven by simple digital project built nearly 20 yrs ago. I actually helped a new guy from Stanford with not much to do build it at HP as a "special project" back when engineers actually had time to do "learning activities". He gave the tree to me when he left the company in the mid 1980's.

What is amazing is all the LEDs on the string still work as to the chips in the box. It was designed with CMOS to run on a 9V battery so I added a plug for an adaptor so I just plug it in each year.

20 yrs later... .still working....
