He's an actor hired to play a "good ol' boy" and serves merely as a telegenic figurehead of the operation. Near as I can tell, on the civilian side of the government, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Perle and Wolfowitz are the driving force, in the military, JCS Chair Dick Myers is clearly a co-conspirator. After his utter failure in his role as head of air defenses on 9/11, he ducked and covered from Congressional questions about just what the hell he was up to. Then he started the war machine in earnest. In the private sector, the big cheeses are more murky. One who emerges like a cockroach from the shadows is Pug Winokur, who has ties to the Bush family, Enron, Dyncorp, Harvard and can read your financial statements any time he wants. Another is Tom Hicks, a Bush family associate. And then there is the Carlyle Group. Oy vey! What a travesty in a democracy. |
