China needs to be more savvy on intellectual property: top judge
BEIJING, : China needs to protect itself better against foreign countries abusing intellectual property rights to gain economic advantages, the nation's top judge said.
"Some developed countries could protect their domestic markets by abusing intellectual property rights and making allegations of dumping," said Xiao Yang, president of the Supreme People's Court, according to Xinhua news agency.

China's judges should fight this trend by doing more research on intellectual property rights, he told a meeting of heads of provincial-level courts.
Since China entered the World Trade Organization on December 11, 2001, local courts have accepted a growing number of cases related to intellectual property, including transnational cases, the news agency said.
In the first 11 months of 2003, Chinese courts handled 5,750 intellectual property lawsuits, an increase of 24.6 percent over the same period last year.
"Over the past two years, Chinese courts endeavored to improve trial standards on intellectual property disputes," said Jiang Zhipei, head of the intellectual property court under the Supreme People's Court.
"A judicial system to protect intellectual property rights is now basically established in China," he said.
