Ford mulls building Land Rovers in China

Ford is considering building Land Rovers or Volvos in China as it attempts to muscle in on the booming market for luxury vehicles in the world's most populous country.

The US carmaker is studying which brand would be most suited to the Chinese market. Insiders stressed that the study was unlikely to be completed until late next year, and Ford could still reject the idea. But senior executives were optimistic it would go ahead.

If it was decided to build Land Rovers in China it would be the first time the off-roaders were made outside Britain, although they are assembled from kits in South Africa and other countries.

Ford is embroiled in a dispute with workers at its Solihull factory in the West Midlands over quality and productivity, which has led to a vote in favour of strike action.
