China Tills Fertile Ground
by: David Murphy

Already the world's factory floor, China now wants to become the world's farm stand. Freed of government grain mandates, millions of peasants are trying to specialize in crops such as garlic, mushrooms, cut flowers and apples, grabbing market share in the U.S., Japan and Europe. China is the world's leading garlic producer and the main vegetable supplier to Japan. During the first seven months of this year, China exported $11.4 billion in agricultural produce, up 18.5% over the same period last year. China's farm exports in 2002 totaled $18 billion, up 12.8% from 2001.
