lurger,
"1. What is it about socialism that you don't like?"
It depends upon what level of socialism we are talking about. But, if we are talking about the communist version of it I will state categorically that it simply doesn't work. The idea of a completely altruistic state operating purely for the good of the workers may sound good on paper, but it was an impossible reality to achieve. Essentially, the only two remaining communist states are North Korea, which has more in common with a facist-monarchy and Cuba whose communist regime I predict will die with Fidel Castro. You'll have a tough time convincing me that China is communist anymore. They have stock exchanges, allow outside investments and increasingly are acting like a large corporate enterprise.
Most socialist literature I have read still despises capitalism in spite of the fact that Capitalism works. Capitalism produces wealth, jobs, innovation and opportunities for the ambitious and motivated. Socialist systems do not.
"Why do you think we went to war in Iraq?"
The belief that Hussein had WMD's was legitimate. Everybody on the planet including Hans Blix knew absolutely that Hussein had produced WMDs in the past. What happened to those weapons is a legitimate question to ask. I find it amazing to believe that Saddam Hussein, out of the goodness of his heart, simply destroyed & disposed of his WMDs and then was dumb enough not to allow UN inspectors look for the damn things to their hearts content. He'd still be in power today had he done so.
At this juncture in time I will concede the possibility that he did eliminate the weapons, but I will never understand why he tempted fate and the Americans by defying UN inspections. Maybe you could be good enough to answer this mystery for.
Aside from the WMD issue there were other reasons to see regime change in Iraq. Hussein's hatred of the West, his lust for power, the half-million Iraqi-Iranis he killed, the mere possibility of terrorist connections past, current or future were all sufficient reasons to see him go. In the good ole USA we saw with our own eyes what 25 dedicated terrorists could do with a little bit of training and financing. We shudder to think of the terror possibilities with a government sponsored effort. That's why we went into Afghanistan and Iraq and why we're still there.
Truly, there are other injustices being committed in the world today. Afghanistan and Iraq seemed the most compelling and pressing given the events of 911. |
