ARMORED WARFARE: How the M-1 Became a Fuel Hog

I have no idea who the writer is, but he does not have his facts straight. (Imagine that.) I assign no value to that article.

He would have you believe the M1 tank can't make it around the corner without a pit stop. His comment and elaborate explanation that fuel consumption is the same at idle and top speed is completely false.

Here are the official statistics:
The M1 has a 505 gallon fuel tank.

It gets 60 gallons per hour when traveling cross-country.
30+ gallons per hour while operating at a tactical ideal.
10 gallons basic idle.

Using a military tanker, it takes 10 minutes to refuel.

The writer's critique seems silly. What young boy does not understand the trade-off of power and speed to mileage? The M1 was designed to be the fastest, most powerful tank in the world. It has proven itself on the battlefield in both open and difficult terrain. It is what it is and that is pretty damn good.

Could it be improved? Certainly. It has been. We are now in the third generation of M1 tanks. It can fire its weapons at top speed with a one-shot kill ratio approaching 50:1. The current version is bad to the bone and feared by all infantrymen and armor soldiers everywhere.

"THE M1A2 TANK IS A FULL-
TRACKED, LOW PROFILE LAND COMBAT ASSAULT WEAPONS SYSTEM WITH FULL
ARMOR PROTECTION, SHOOT-ON-THE-MOVE FIREPOWER, AND A HIGH DEGREE OF
MANEUVERABILITY AND TACTICAL AGILITY. IT IS EQUIPPED WITH A 120MM
MAIN GUN, A CAL 50 MACHINEGUN, AND TWO 7.62 MACHINEGUNS."
