I was reminded this morning that Cheney and Rumsfeld could not launch their war in the face reasoned debate in the Senate. That is why, a year ago as the plans for conquest were being finalized the neocons had to install a Senate Leader who was both beholding to them, and a novice in Senate rules and traditions so they could easily steamroll him.

Frist was given the top Senate spot as a rookie, along with a big bribe in the form of a medicare handout to his hospital associations, in that curious Trent Lott affair. The purpose of that pustch is only now becoming clear. Any experienced Senator may have delayed the war authorization just long enough to find out what they were voting for, and whether the public and world agreed.
