China signs 1.59 billion dollars in purchasing deals in US

BEIJING, : China has signed contracts with US businesses totalling 1.59 billion dollars in an effort to appease American concerns over a growing trade surplus with the Asian giant, according to state press.

The bulk of the purchases were signed in Chicago on Thursday, including deals for 1.4 billion dollars worth of soybeans and 190 million dollars worth of machinery and electronics, the China News Service reported.

The purchasing group is the second to have gone to the United States in recent weeks, timed around a visit to Washington by Premier Wen Jiabao.

"This is a substantial action based on the consensus reached with the US side on economic and trade issues during Premier Wen's visit to the United States," Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Liao Xiaoqi, head of the government trade delegation, was quoted as saying.
