SHANGHAI, Dec. 19 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese scientists have developed two models of chips for third generation multimedia mobile phone sets, which they claim will end the country's reliance on imported chips.

The chips were developed by a group of scientists headed by Professor Lin Zhenghui, president of the Institute of Super-large-scale Integrated Circuits at Shanghai-based Tongji University.

The professor said the two types of microchips, named Shenxin Iand Shenxin II, would enable a variety of value-added services andapplications as well as voice services, including digital video recording and transmission, and video broadcasting.

The scientists had been awarded 17 patents from the United States and 13 Chinese patents, Lin said.

The professor said the chips had taken seven years to develop.
