As the only matters that seem 'important' these days to the Chattering Classes are the ones that revolve around handicapping the '04 election... perhaps that sole concern can be distilled down to just two main factors:

1) The economy and the markets. (The late 'snap-shot' taken by the public sometime in late summer to September/October will determine that opinion.)

2) Whether the natural pull of sectarianism in the patched-together 'nation' we call "Iraq" can be papered-over until the election.

Longer term (when it would have no domestic US political implications), the fragmentation of the artificial Iraqi nation into representative ethnic regions (Kurdish, Sunni Arab, Shia) might prove inevitable (as Bush Pere & Scowcroft maintained).
