Closer to "8.9%" if you add back in the officially classified "unemployed, discouraged, and no-longer actively looking for work" people --- referenced in the appendix of the Labor Department stats. Pretty easy to keep a nice, low, appealing 'headline number' if you change the definitions so as to remove large chunks of unemployed from the 'official definition'....
