Any step toward peace and moderation is welcome. If Libya isn't playing one of their games again (and they look pretty serious), we will have an interesting situation - tacit western support for a less-well-armed Arab tyrant.

There are those who would argue that was another potential outcome in Iraq, given time, talks and enough saber rattling to do the job. We will never know for sure, of course. Saddam was too friggin' stupid to take a sweet exile deal and walk out the door. But he was also pretty toothless compared to Moamar and his pals in Tripoli.

I always preferred foreign affairs to domestic politics because the combinations and permutations are endless. Problem is, the actual practice of working in foreign affairs day to day is a bureaucratic slog for most of those involved.

But I digress. Let's hope that the sudden eruption of peace and common sense continues.
