Yes, that does explain the unusual use of the words "liberal Democrat". A truly convincing, non-biased use of the label would be if Peter Jennings invited commentary from someone and described his political stance as "liberal Democrat", in the way he often describes the odd Republican commentator as "conservative Republican".
