Re "liberal Democrat," have we not reached the point where that is redundant? Same with conservative Republican. There are a few conservative Democrats left and a few perhaps not liberal but moderate Republicans but over the years the parties have, indeed, sorted themselves out by political philosophy. So it would seem that we should accept the default and only modify Republican or Democrat when the individual is outside the norm. In most cases it should suffice to just say Rep or Dem and we can assume the rest. Our terminology hasn't kept up with the times in this case. We might modify Democrat with "radical" where that applies. Or Republican with "far right" or "paleo" or some such for the folks who are really out there. But other than to identify the fish out of water or the extremists, Democrat should suffice for one side and Republican for the other.
