workers are starting to really fight back wrt all the wage deflation and benefit cuts.

I believe the government is not doing itself any favors by blasting these trumped up GDP figures all over the place.

Why the heck should workers agree to a reduction in wages by $3-$4 in this environment? Companies are making more money than ever. This treatment of the US workforce by corporations that are raking in the dough will be remembered by voters at the polls in 04, imho.

Although healthcare costs are at the center of the dispute, Maynard said the companies and the union are also wrangling over pension benefits and pay for new hires, which caused the range of value for the proposal. Among the owners' proposals is a reduction in hourly wages for new hires, which currently average $12.97 an hour, by between $3 and $4.

"They want to create a second class of workers," Maynard said. The new hires would also not be eligible for benefits or pension plans, Maynard said.

As a taxpayer I know that when "workers are not eligible for benefits" it means that I, as a CA taxpayer get to pick up the tab for Safeway. Nope.
