And that justifies keeping secret vital [to consumers] safety information such as warranty claims, field reports from dealers, and consumer complaints, auto and tire safety data?

There are many examples of that sort. In Aberdeen, Md., families who live near an Army weapons base are suing the Army for details of toxic pollution fouling the town's drinking-water supplies. The Army has refused to provide information that could help residents locate and track the pollution. National security? I'll bet if you lived in Aberdeen and were trying to obtain info about your fouled drinking water, you'd be thinking "With friends like these, who needs enemies?"

Just like everyone else, Americans have to watch their politicians very closely. To trust them to know better than the people do about too many things is not wise, imo.
