I was too busy with work in the '80s, to follow politics very closely.

I was in the same boat. I knew that Reagan and Bush were crooks. I just didn't know the unsavory details. I can see how they get away with their chicanery. With most Americans acting like robotic squirrels in a rotating cage, they don't have time to understand how they are being swindled by the Bush family.
