Genuine joy seems to have been taken away from pro sports altogether. On the other hand, the 7th grade girls basketball team that I'm coaching won its first game today (after two losses by wide margins). Seeing the joy on their faces made me believe, if only for a moment, that they were more excited than their coach. <G>

That hit home.

I can relate to that for sure.

During my sons' Mini Packers football season we'd come home
each Sunday after our game and turn on the NFL. What a
stark contrast there was between the two games. I could
not get wrapped up in the NFL games. They seemed so
meaningless in comparison.

In many of the pros, lost is the innocence and shear love
for the game.

But then as all hope is lost, a Jerry Rice reaches high
over the middle for the first down. Or I witness a team
rally behind the kid-like energy of a Chad Pennington. Or
watching a QB play in pain day in and day out like McNair
for the thrill of victory.

Unfortunately these images aren't picked up as often by the
ESPN highlight reel. Instead we see a Warren Sapp taunting
an official, Randy Moss flexing his muscles, or some
idiot hiding a cell phone in the goal post padding and
making a call after his touchdown.

There is hope for the sport yet. As long as there are a
few leaders on the field, playing like a kid, I'll be
watching.

...That is unless they decide to turn every game into a Pay-
Per-View system. Slowly that is what the league is turning
towards. The day I have to pay to watch my Giants suck on
TV is the day my kids and I stop watching.

There's too much quality free stuff on to buy my images of
Jeremy Shockey.

P.S. Good luck with the Basketball season. You seem to
have the qualities that make a great coach.
