Iraqi pipelines attacked
21/12/2003
Baghdad - Pipelines carrying Iraqi crude from the south and north to refineries in the centre were attacked on Friday night affecting production and adding to the chronic fuel shortages facing ordinary Iraqis.

US coalition forces said they were looking into reports of other attacks on oil infrastructure near Tikrit, hometown of Saddam Hussein.

Three anti-tank rockets hit a pipeline south of Baghdad causing a significant leakage. An explosive device also hit a pipeline in the Mashahda region, 50km north of the capital.

The twin attacks have limited the output of the centre's refineries, already operating at half their capacity, according to Jihad who did not provide further details.

Separately, the US-led coalition said that it was looking into reports of heavy flames around pipelines in northern Iraq between the refinery town of Beiji and Tikrit 180km north of Baghdad.

"We are checking on it," said a coalition spokesperson.

Iraqi officials say there have been 86 separate attacks on Iraq's oil infrastructure since the fall of Saddam's regime in April, leading to fuel shortages and hampering the country's efforts to boost production and secure much needed funds for reconstruction.
