Libya’s fatal blow to axis of evil

The news has delighted three American oil companies, Marathon, Amerada Hess, and ConocoPhillips whose Libyan leases were about to expire.

The Bush Junta is trying to spin this as a huge victory but it isn't. This is what comes from having a President who likes to play poker up against world leaders who favor chess. It is easy for Libya to give up what it didn't actually have in the first place. And the story is the US has promised financial inducements as their part of the bargain, MR. Taxpayer. But spin aside, the actual result is that the "Axis of Evil" just lost more credibility as a justification for unending war. And, like Iran, US pressure is actually driving Libya closer to Russia, which alone offers protection from Israel's WMDs. Speaking of WMDs, this is where Bush really got checkmated (from the Persian "Shah Maht", meaning "The King is dead"). Now that Libya has renounced its WMDs, world pressure on Israel to do the same will increase.
