Here's my retail report:

Went to Wal-Mart today in the northern part of Chicago. Typically this store is exceedingly busy at all hours, especially on the weekend. I went in at 9:00 a.m. The store was surprisingly lightly populated. The big shocker was when I got to the checkout lines. Virtually no lines at all. This was probably the least-busy checkout lines I have ever seen at this store. Shocking.

I also went to the "Magnificent Mile" at 3:00 p.m. For those unaware, the "Magnificent Mile" is located in downtown Chicago along Michigan Avenue. Basically, for a stretch of about 7-8 city blocks, one can find every conceivable middle and high-end retailer. While there were people walking around, the traffic was pretty light. The stores looked fairly sparsely populated, and people in general didn't seem to be buying much from what I saw. Probably as lackluster as last Christmas season, in my opinion. When one contrasts the Mag Mile Christmas season action of the late '90s to what is transpiring this year and last, it is a rather unbelievable contrast.

I'll revisit the Magnificent Mile in a couple of days to see how the "last minute" shopping action is.
