Nadine,
The Palestinians have been defeated. Right now the Palestinian rump state offers little for the average palestiian and even if it could work, the terrorist would see that it didnt. Jordanian police and even military on the ground bringing stability to arabs by arabs might be a welcome solution. In 1970 the Palestinian movement was young and hopeful. In 2003 it is old and tired. In 1970, Hussein was in a weakened state because of his loss in the 1967 war. Today Jordan is as modern as arab states are permitted to be. It just seems natural to me that the Palestinian state will become Jordan under the tutelage of Abdullah. After all this is what Likud wanted all along sans the west bank. Now that their dream of holding on to the West Bank is in shambles as is the Palestinian dream of conquering Israel, it seems time to consider something that will work long term. That free trade zone idea i think can be useful too as arab and jew learn to live together. Jerusalem could be home to all of this. I write about this because as much as the peace plan recently signed by non-govt folks attracts me in theory, i just cant see a successful palestinian state as long as arafat is alive and terrorist are not stopped by the arabs themselves. The one thing we know about Jordan/Egypt et al is that there is nothing they wont do to eliminate the terrorists. Mike
PS Substitute Egypt for Jordan--sounds crazier but maybe the egyptians could pull it off??
