Mish Mall Report
Went to Woodfield Mall - Enormous mall in affluent NW Chicago suburb near Ohare Airport

I did find a parking spot right away and although the lot was very full, there were lots of spots further out. Crowded but not packed.

Inside, the mall was pretty crowded really.
Lots of people with shopping bags.
One way for me to judge shopping crowds however is buy the nuissance factor. I am a very fast walker usually and I do not like people getting in my way and slowing me down. I have no patience for this most of the time and today for the most part, I could move about freely and avoid most of the people most of the time while moving about at my normally fast pace. I have been at Woodfield where it was nearly impossble to move at anything other than a snails pace.

I can say that Marshal Fields seemed dead, a) for Fields and b) especially in relation to the rest of the mall traffic that I thought was relatively heavy but not obscenely so. The high end jewerly stores were also dead. Very dead. Not so some of the other chains.

Are people shopping down, only buying "bargains" this year, avoiding Marshal fields and other "high class" stores?
I got there about 1:30 and would have thought that to be near a peak time but the stores were more crowded later as were the parking lots when I left at 3:30. (Morning shoppers gave up and the after lunch shoppers came pouring in?)

Not much to make of this really.
All in all I would guess average to slightly down, but I really did not interview people as to whether or not they were spending more or less than last year.
