<<The question is really about equal distribution of a difficult workload across our society>>

This is a foolish and short-sighted statement. It is equivalent to arguing that the best way to accomplish garbage pickup in our cities is to draft garbage men across the economic spectrum. The question is really, and totally, about what is the best way to accomplish the goals of the military.

Well paaahdan my foolishness. Blame my bad vision on the cheap whiskey.
May I point out that that is similar to your initial argument. Again I disagree. Let me rephrase what I said earlier...Military service for Americans does not resemble corporations or garbage pick-up.

The question is really, and totally, about what is the best way to accomplish the goals of the United States of America.

I submit to you that the accomplishment of those goals is better achieved, and more likely to be successfully achieved, if those involved in the task share a common, active desire to participate.

I agree with you but on a different level.
I submit to you that the accomplishment of our military goals and the safety of our servicemen and women will be better achieved when every American household has something to lose besides their freedoms. For only then will their active participation in providing for our military strength be a given. Only then will they share a common, active desire to participate and active participation is essential to a democracy. Lip service is not sufficient and 17 and 18 year old soldiers are not capable of making the decisions that must be made regarding their equipment, training and deployments.
