I bought my son Panther and an iSight camera. He's already got it. Unfortunately, I don't have one. But, we did already do a live video conference, because I have the old Canon ZR45 MC. It really worked well, even though my own initial set up went a little rough. The Canon has a battery save timer that shuts it down if you don't pull the trigger for 15 minutes. It even shuts down when it is plugged in. However, I found that if you set it to record to card and plug it in, it stays on.
His family is in Thibodaux, LA. I'm just under Detroit, MI. It is a totally unique experience that is difficult to describe. On the one hand, it seems like you are both there in the same room, but on the other it seems like you're talking to the TV set. But, it's way better than just voice over IP.
To give some perspective on the corporate desktop market ... at work they just forced us to upgrade all of our network from Windows NT to Windows 2000. Although not impressive, it is a good thing because it allowed me to download and install iTunes at work. For some reason, perhaps known only to the corporate IT department, the program wont load its ripping or iTMS browsing parts. I loaded 155 mp3s from a CD anyway and now have a balls out music player to show off. Just thought the board might be interested in how slooow corporations are to adopt changes in technology.
