How Americans Can Buy American:
The Power of Consumer Patriotism

Quote: "Free trade is one this nation's oldest and most cherished principles."

John Zogby, president and CEO of Zogby International, an independent polling and opinion research firm.
St. Louis Business Journal, October 13, 2003
Comment: What history book has this guy been reading? America’s love affair with free trade began in the Dwight Eisenhower administration. Before that, Republicans were the party of the protective tariff. The founding fathers of this country were protectionists, not free traders. Here are a couple of historical quotes that counter the quote from Mr. Zogby:

"Protection, which guards and develops our industries, is a cardinal policy of the Republican party. The measure of protection should always at least equal the difference in the cost of production at home and abroad."
1900 GOP platform

"The Republican party stands now, as always, in the fullest sense for the policy of tariff protection to American industries and American labor."
1916 GOP platform
