My unwholesome idealism still has me believing service is an opportunity not a burden.

It's not idealism, it's envy and jealousy. You're envious and jealous that you "served" while, according to you, the children of rich people (Bill Clinton and Howard Dean) don't "serve." Whatever "serving" means. You want to drag everybody down to one level - "equity."

Which puts the lie to what we all express, that serving in the military is noble and superior. If you're envious that others didn't serve, you actually think that service was inferior, not superior.

Are there jobs crying out to be done that are left undone? You didn't mention any. You just want Bill Clinton's kids and Howard Dean's kids to get shot at, as you were.

That's not idealism, that's hatred and rage. You hate people you think have it better than you.

Well, you were in the military and I wasn't, so maybe you're right. Maybe you got the raw end of the deal. But your solution is no solution, because treating everybody the same is never going to happen.

If a young Einstein is drafted at age 18, whoever gets him will make out like a bandit, while the person who is stuck with a young gangbanger or someone with a 75 IQ will have a real burden. Drafting everybody won't make them all the same, there will still be stars, gems and pearls, and there will still be dross.

The smartest kids and the ones with the best connections would still get the plums and the dumber ones and the ones with the worse connections would still get the shitty end of the stick.

Bill Clinton's kids and Howard Dean's kids will never peel potatoes or hump a gun in the infantry, nor will they ever mop floors in a mental ward.

But dream on.
