Beijing cracks Taiwan spy ring
Mon 22 December, 2003 10:22

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Chinese authorities cracked a major espionage group working for Taiwan in mid-December and arrested at least 36 alleged spies, Hong Kong's Ming Pao newspaper reports.

Twenty-one of those arrested are from Taiwan and 15 from mainland China, the newspaper said on Monday, citing unidentified sources.

Beijing apparently got wind of the clandestine operation when Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian gave details with pinpoint accuracy of the location of Chinese missiles aimed at the island, it added.

China's Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the report.

The report said the intelligence network was spread across China's coastal provinces of Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Fujian, Guangdong and Hainan island.

The 21 people from Taiwan were mostly businesspeople working on the mainland, the newspaper said. It did not say what cover the 15 mainland Chinese operatives assumed.

Chen has been pressing hard of late for a referendum calling on Beijing to remove missiles aimed at Taiwan at the same time as a March 20 presidential election.

Beijing -- which regards Taiwan as a breakaway province to be brought back to the fold, by force if necessary -- has threatened to crush any move towards independence.
