There is little to suggest the essential falseness of the Jessica Lynch story, except late denials from physicians who may have had guns to their heads from the Ba'athists. Believing that the Lynch story had some inaccuracies is reasonable. Believing that it was substantially false involves a conscious choice to credit contradictory testimony over that of the Army. Nothing is proven.

Of course, anyone who would believe that the Administration launched a war only to win an election is rather credulous. Which election? The one that was several months ahead of the launch of hostilities? That makes little sense. The one upcoming? Then why take the risks of failure, and engender all this controversy, there are safer ways to win an election?
