Services to the poor are being cut, except for the inconvenient fact that federal nondefense spending, adjusted for inflation, has tripled since the mid-1970's, while federal defense spending, adjusted for inflation, has declined slightly in the same time period.

You would think that a national party would be able to articulate its talking points so that at least they're factually correct. But for some odd reason, they don't.

I have always maintained that Gore had a fairly easy route to the Presidency. All he had to do was point to the GDP growth under Clinton (trumpeted by the same people who now deny that GDP is a valid measure of anything) and say, "I was part of the team that achieved this. My whole life, I have kept my zipper zipped except when Tipper unzips it. I won't be chasing skirt and lying about it, I will be continuing to work at continuing the economic successes of the 1990's." That is literally all he had to say. He could repeat it over and over again. Instead, he chose class warfare as his primary theme. People don't trust that message. Intuitively, they understand that even if they aren't at the top or in the top half of the ladder, they want to be, and in America they have a better chance than anyplace else to get there. And when they do get there, they don't want to have their wallet lifted.

Or as the Wall Street Journal editorialists put it recently.... "People want to keep the money they earn. Honest. We are not making that up." <g>
