Malnutrition (very common in children, who are no longer eating well- since mom and dad have to feed them fast food so often since both parents now work- and malnutrition isn't just seen in the poor), obesity, skin diseases (myriad kinds), an epidemic of asthma and allergy related diseases to be caught and treated, developmental problems- my child's strabismus was not caught even WITH check ups, and he is now legally blind in one eye for life- it's common, and it needs to be caught before the age of 8, or the eye cannot be saved. (Now my child's problem wasn't caught because of his other handicaps, but I wouldn't want to see it happen to any other family just because they couldn't afford routine well child care). I could go on and on, but it would be better if you just read a few good articles on preventative medicine and why it is important for children. I've been reading all the articles for years since I have children, and I've been in the health care system seeking help for them. I've seen what early detection can do, and the terrible things that can happen when correctable problems are not detected in time.
Here's a compendium of a few good looking articles- not all are relevant- but maybe you'll see there is more to the prevention side of things than you imagined. When you don't have children, it's easy not to give it much thought.
